Good-bye to Honolulu

We left Hawaii Wednesday afternoon but that morning we tried to see whales again since the company we had used allows you to go on tours until you do see whales. Still no whales in sight but a good view of the city and of wind sailing. Tasha was an outstanding tour guide and hostess. - Nancy

In a location close to Turtle Bay we saw sea turtles close to shore. They looked like rocks in the surf.

Pearl Harbor

On Monday we went to visit Pearl Harbor. It has a very informative museum. Then we went on the boat to visit the US Arizona Memorial. - Nancy
The USS Arizona is the final resting place for many of the ship's 1,177 crewmen who lost their lives on December 7, 1941. The 184-foot-long Memorial structure spans the mid-portion of the sunken battleship and consists of three main sections: the entry room; the assembly room, a central area designed for ceremonies and general observation; and the shrine room, where the names of those killed on the Arizona are engraved on the marble wall.

Father Damien won recognition for his ministry in the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi to people with leprosy, who had been placed under a government-sanctioned medical quarantine on the island of Moloka'i. After sixteen years caring for the physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of those in the leper colony, he eventually contracted and died of the disease, resulting in his characterization as a "martyr of charity".
