I had wanted to go to the island of Murano. It is famous for glass blowing. There are numerous shops that sell beautiful glass items and also factories where glass is blown. We took an inter-island ferry to Murano. There was a stop at the the island of San Michele which has been the city's cemetery (
cimitero) since the early nineteenth century. As Venice
is an island community, it's not really surprising that its graveyard is also an island.

We watched a glass blowing demonstration and explored shops. I was afraid to turn around in some of the shops because they were tight quarters and very expensive glass sculptures were on display. It was a bit cold and windy so we were not tempted be out too long.

We found a very comfortable restaurant to have a delicious Italian lunch. It was also nice to get warm. Ron, I and the grand kids decided to head back to our B&B and Tracy and Doug decided to explore some more. But we mistakenly took a water taxi that went around the entire island of Venice instead of the one that went to the where we could get a public bus home. I guess we got a free tour of the island but Doug and Tracy got back to our B&B before we did and had to wait to get in because we had the keys.
Since took the wrong water taxi we stopped for Gelato before we got the correct one. It is never too cold for gelato! It was New Year's Eve and there was a big celebration in Venice but we celebrated by going to bed. We did get awakened at midnight by lot of fireworks being set off. So we greeted the New Year of 2018 with no fanfare in Italy. - Nancy
