Visit to Herculaneum

Looking into the ruins
I had a Bianca (Italian word for white) holiday break, which is known as ski holiday in Italy from Feb. 17 to Feb. 21. My friend, Heidi arrived on Feb. 16 and headed to the Amalfi Coast on Sat. Feb. 17.  We took the train to Naples and then the local train to the ancient sites of Herculaneum and Pompeii. Since I had already visited Pompeii I spent the day at the archeological site of Herculaneum. Located in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, Herculaneum was an ancient Roman town destroyed by volcanic pyroclastic flows in 79 AD. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is famous as one of the few ancient cities that can now be seen in much of its original splendour. - Nancy
