With Tasha's flex work schedule we had arranged some months back to spend a long 4-day week-end (Thurs.-Sun. night) at the Sandoz beach cabin at Manzanita. It turned out that we couldn't have picked a better time weather-wise since there was a large high pressure area over the Oregon Coast bringing warm temperatures, little or no wind on the beach, and a full moon on the last night we were there. It was wonderful (full of wonder)!
With clear skies and warm sun on Saturday morning, Tasha and I drove up to the trailhead and climbed Neahkahnie Mtn. Since the trail passes below the peak, we had some difficulty scrambling to the summit but thoroughly enjoyed the panoramic view once we got there.
A definite highlight of our week-end was cooking hot dogs over an open fire on the beach Sunday night, and then making s'mores for dessert. After dark the full moon rose, and with no wind at all, it was a perfect "outdoor picnic supper." The frisbee was along for a little recreation, and since the tide was low there was plenty of beach for exploring.
The week-end wouldn't have been complete without a visit to Hug Point State Park, so we arranged to spend some time there on our way home Monday afternoon. Unfortunately, even though the weather was still picture-perfect, we arrived just shortly after high tide and couldn't even make it around the first rocky outcropping (pictured).
Alas! No opportunity to walk the old "road" that was blasted out of the rock further down to enable early automobiles to drive on the beach all the way to Cannon Beach. But, notwithstanding, it was sure a great week-end! We did, however, miss "Mom Nance" and the rest of the tribe. (And, Daniel, there weren't even any bats!)- rw
