Castel Sant'Angelo

After visiting an English speaking Methodist church service on Sunday we went to tour Castel Sant'Angelo. The first Sunday of every month is free museum entrance so that was a plus. Normally the lines are so long that it discourages one from trying to go on the free day but it was not crowded in December and we entered very quickly. I had walked by the Castel Sant'Angelo several times. Here is a picture I took of it in September.

You can see that is massive. t was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family. The tomb of Hadrian was erected  between 134 and 139 AD.[The building was later used by the popes as a fortress and castle, and is now a museum. The Castle was once the tallest building in Rome. The views from the top are quite impressive. Legend holds that the Archangel Michael appeared atop the mausoleum, sheathing his sword as a sign of the end of the plague of 590, thus lending the castle its present name. -Nancy
