Crypt of Salerno Cathedral

It only cost one Euro to go to the crypt and it was an amazing room. Heidi and I were the only visitors the entire time we were there. It was really interesting to determine what each picture was from the Gospels. It was like have an extended Sunday School lesson.
The crypt, believed to house the remains of Matthew the Apostle, is a vaulted hall with a basilica-like plan divided by columns. It was restored under design by Domenico Fontana and his son Giulio in 1606-1608, with marble decorations added in the 18th century. All of the ceiling frescoes are painted by Belisario Corenzio and depict scenes from the Gospels. The captions are what I think the scene is from in the Bible. Another viewer might have a different idea of what the scene is. - Nancy

wow, that's amazing. When I first looked at the picture of the woman kneeling, I thought maybe it was the woman who touched Jesus cloak to be healed, but I think you may be right. It's amazing that you were the only people there.. such a beautiful building! Funny how the people are all white Europeans.

or.... maybe the reason there is a dog is this one: Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon." But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, "Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us." He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." He answered, "It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." Then Jesus answered her, "Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed instantly.

Whichever it is, it's quite amazing that all 3 stories are about having grace for women, esp. outsider women... when everyone else around didn't seem to think they were worth spending any sort of time with.
