Wieliczka Salt Mine

The Church
The day started early with a trip to the Wieliczka Salt Mine. Salt was discovered there in the 1200's and was very valuable for food preservation for years. The mine is huge and has a church in it. It has many stone carvings. The mining of salt finished in 1992 so now the mine is solely a tourist attraction. There are 1.5 million visitors each ear and the mins is on the UNESCO World List of Cultural and Natural Heritage. The passageways we were in were large but we had views of older areas. - Nancy

Was this one of the famous salt mines there the Nazis stole famous paintings and stored them - part of the Monuments Men story? (Or was that somewhere else?)
